Sat, 5 December 2009 You say tomato, I say to-mah-to… You say giblet (hard ‘g’), I say giblet (soft ‘g’) -- let’s call the whole thing off. And we did call the whole thing off, after I read X’s blackberry seven years ago. I knew, in an instant, my perception of my marriage was all wrong. How did I get it so WRONG? What comes first? Perception or reality? Which begets which? And what wins in the end? Is there an end? Boy, this can get tiring. So I can sleep at night, I work on my perception. The new bra, the new face cream, Target’s (soft ‘g’) groovy magnifying reading glasses, now a necessity to read the New York Times, unwittingly mask the dark circles under my eyes. A solution for my vanity and vision. A two for one deal! I look better. I feel better. I see. For a moment. Then I realize I’m the generic “blonde divorced woman” dropping off the kids at school, interchangeable with one or more of the others in the blur of the schoolyard. Does the blur hurt? Or does it feel comfortable. I’m not alone. My kids are still young enough to perceive me as great. And beautiful. But I’m still relegated to the servants’ quarters in their crayoned dream house. Everyone knows this is motherhood's reality, not perception. Do other peoples’ perceptions shortchange me, make me less than I want to be or thought I was? Does it challenge me to look better, act differently and therefore become someone I am not? We are constantly updating ourselves, and constantly revised and altered by others. But in the end, or even in the middle, there is one big bowl of chicken soup for the soul. Sat, 13 December 2008 In divorce, there is no one story exactly alike. Laurie's interview with Thorina Rose, author of The Heartbreak Diet: A Story of Family, Fidelity and Starting Over, though, plays like two old friends finding the humor in shared stories and similar circumstances.Thorina Rose's funny, beautifully illustrated memoir charts the unexpected dissolution of her marriage and the struggles and adventures of starting over. After marrying young, living in New York, and settling in San Francisco, Rose and her husband start a family. When he begins an affair with his "running partner," Rose must find a way to rebuild her life with her two young sons, navigating her own inner doubts, the chorus of advice from well-meaning friends, and coping mechanisms close at hand: retail therapy and pet adoption (not so useful); leaning on friends and travels with gay men (very useful). With humor and insight, The Heartbreak Diet is a moving and entertaining meditation on fidelity, family, and finding one's way. You already have what it takes to listen, right on your computer. Trying to figure out what you want to be when you grow up when you’re already into your 30s and two small demanding creatures underfoot assume you know and understand everything can be a daunting task.
